The zoo is not the traditional type with cages, instead it tries to simulate the animals natural habitat. There are tropical forests where you can see gibbons, hogs, hornbills and giant snails, rivers and waterfalls where the crocodiles and tigers sunbathe, a ancient baobab tree filled with lemurs and mines where the bats hang out! The only thing separating you from these animals are the walkways, riverbanks or glass windows.
Throughout July and August the zoo is open until midnight and you can pay a moonlight visit to watch the nocturnal animals you would not normally be able to see like porcupines, leopards and flying foxes, accompanied by a soundtrack of forest noise.
For the kids there is a play area and miniature farm. If it all gets a bit much you can take a break and enjoy a meal in one of the themed restaurants. The zoo is also disability friendly
Tickets: Zoo box office, hotels, travel agencies, and the Portillo bus terminals.
